Letters from the St. James alumni project in Kyiv — visits with graduates, churches and pastors.

New contacts and a new view of God’s work

“May the words of my mouth and the meditation of my heart be acceptable in your sight, O Lord, my rock and my redeemer.” — Psalm 19:14

My return to Kyiv has given me new contacts and a new view of God’s work in Ukraine. I have met with several alumni and begun gathering their stories — learning what has taken place in their lives since graduating from St. James Bible College.

Over the last three weeks I have visited several churches and attended services at Christian Hope, New Life and New Generation churches. The pastors have been so welcoming and speak highly of the alumni they have worked with and who are in their churches.

I had the opportunity to meet with Pastor Gennady and Larissa Kernozhitsky, alumni and pastors in Minsk, Belarus. Gennady has planted three churches in Belarus and, despite resistance from the government, has been able to continue his ministry. I also met Alexander Pavlyuk (group #105, class of ’95), now a pastor in western Ukraine building a fellowship of Protestant, Orthodox and Catholic pastors, and Svetlana Monastyrskaya (class of 2000), who serves at New Generation church.

An update on the alumni project in Kyiv

“Give thanks to the Lord, call on His name; make known His deeds among the peoples.” — Psalm 105:1

My arrival in Kyiv just two weeks ago has been a blessing. I arrived just as the Ukrainian Independence Day holidays began — the whole city was celebrating with concerts and festivals. It was a good time to adjust to the time change and my surroundings.

Since the holidays ended I have begun the registration process for foreign residents and the search for an apartment. By God’s grace I have met local Ukrainians who are helping me through each step — translations, government offices and paperwork — so that the work of reconnecting with St. James alumni can begin.
